Robert Thorne - BMW Road Test

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
SHERMAN, Conn., Dec. 6 - Matt Lee is well known to visitors of twintooth.com, but who is Robert Thorne? He's one fast kid, that's who. Just like Lee, Thorne got his start in karts. In fact, he and Lee raced at the same events for several years, which is how they became friends. Geography played a role too, because Thorne is from Sherman, Conn. while Lee lives in Syosset, N.Y. Thorne is currently a sophomore at Canterbury School in New Milford, Conn. And, if school and racing weren't enough, he also works as an amateur deejay. When the 2006 Formula BMW USA season opener is held Lee and Thorne will resume their "friendly adversary" role, as they'll both race under the Twin tooth Racing banner as teammates in Autotecnica-prepped cars in the Formula BMW USA series. More detailed information about Thorne, 15, is located in his bio section, but to get our Internet readers up to speed, here are some fast facts about the team's newest addition: • After an invitation-only runoff in Valencia, Spain in 2005 with 36 top karters from North and South America, he earned a top spot as one of only five drivers to receive a $40,000 scholarship from BMW to compete in the Formula BMW USA series in 2006. • From 2000 to 2004 he successfully competed in World Karting Association national races and the Champ Car Stars of Tomorrow series with seven national titles. • He won the 2003 Eastern Division championship in the Cadet class in the Champ Car Stars of Tomorrow series. • He won the 2003 New York Empire State Sprint divisional series championship in three different classes: HPV Junior Sportsman, Cadet and Yamaha Junior Sportsman. • In July 2000 he became the WKA Grand National Champion in the Cadet class at Badger Raceway in Dousman, Wis., the "Daytona" of the WKA.
