Conquest Racing Completes MSR Houston Test

Angleton, Texas, 2/10/07 – With their 2007 driver lineup complete, the Conquest Racing Atlantic Team took to the MSR Houston track yesterday and today for the second of three Cooper Tires Presents the Champ Car Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda open tests. Conquest drivers, Matt Lee (Pictured right) and Giacomo Ricci ran strong and consistent both days, completing nearly 400 laps combined.

American rookie Matt Lee put in the eighth quickest time of the weekend of the 24 car field. His new teammate, Ricci, who signed on with the team only a couple of days ago, performed well in his first official test, clocking the 11th fastest time of the two days despite having to run with a heavier fuel load due to a fuel pick-up problem. Like the majority of the field both Conquest drivers registered their quickest laps in the Saturday morning session.

EFormulaCarNews.com picks Matt Lee for Formula BMW Top 10 Drivers

4. Matt Lee
Team Autotecnica
2 wins, 7 podiums, 5 pole positions

"Matt Lee perhaps was the fastest driver in the championship this past year, scoring a season-high five pole positions and setting the fastest lap on more than one occasion. Unfortunately a slow start in the season-opening doubleheader and one off weekend ruined his chances at the series title. The very quiet driver will make the move up the racing ladder to the Champ Car Atlantic Championship in 2007, where he will battle several of his fellow Formula BMW USA graduates."

Syosset, N.Y.'s Lee Wins Season Finale And Finishes Second In Formula BMW USA Championship After Mosport Doubleheader

BOWMANVILLE, Ontario, Sept. 4 - In the movie "Tin Cup," Roy "Tin Cup" McAvoy, played by Kevin Costner, doesn't win the U.S. Open but he goes down in golf history by following through on his "defining moment" until he successfully makes his shot.

And in the end, with the crowd cheering wildly, Rene Russo's Dr. Molly Griswold tells McAvoy that nobody will remember who won the tournament, but they'll always remember his hole in 12.

Matt Lee's story isn't exactly like that, but he can relate.

On Sunday at Mosport International Raceway the 16-year-old from Syosset, N.Y. came from 23rd place on lap eight to take the lead on the next-to-last lap and win a stirring 16-lap Formula BMW USA season finale in storybook fashion.

Coupled with his third-place finish in Saturday's race he finished second for the overall national championship in the 14-race series by six points. Robert Wickens won the title with 149 points to Lee's 143. Lee had just one point more than the third place finisher, Reed Stevens.

It was the closest points battle in the series' history.

Lee Is Highest-Finishing American
   At Formula BMW World Final

SYOSSET, N.Y., Jan. 19 - Bahrain is more than 6,000 miles from Matt Lee's home in Syosset, N.Y., but the 16-year-old says that competing in the first annual Formula BMW World Final there recently was well worth the trip.

Lee was one of only three American drivers from the Formula BMW USA series and the only driver from the Northeast to compete in the World Final, which pitted drivers from 15 different countries in a head-to-head, $60,000 event. After advancing through a series of preliminary races Lee started 11th out of 35 drivers in the final race and finished 14th, the highest finish by an American.

With a test drive in a BMW Formula One car up for grabs the competition was a wild and wooly affair, and two crashes cost Lee a better position. One in the third heat sent him from fifth position to 17th. Then, in the final restart of the last race, he was struck from the rear and pushed back to 27th, but he still was able to work his way back up to 14th at the checkered.

Robert Thorne Brings Formidable Karting
Legacy to Twin tooth Formula BMW Team

SHERMAN, Conn., Dec. 6 - Matt Lee is well known to visitors of twintooth.com, but who is Robert Thorne?

He's one fast kid, that's who.

Just like Lee, Thorne got his start in karts. In fact, he and Lee raced at the same events for several years, which is how they became friends. Geography played a role too, because Thorne is from Sherman, Conn. while Lee lives in Syosset, N.Y. Thorne is currently a sophomore at Canterbury School in New Milford, Conn. And, if school and racing weren't enough, he also works as an amateur deejay.

When the 2006 Formula BMW USA season opener is held Lee and Thorne will resume their "friendly adversary" role, as they'll both race under the Twin tooth Racing banner as teammates in Autotecnica-prepped cars in the Formula BMW USA series.
